Kültürel İçgörüler ve Hikayeler

There is a moment, early in the Sema ceremony, when the dervishes shed their black cloaks and begin to turn — slowly at first, arms crossed at the chest, eyes half-closed — and something in the room shifts. Whether yo...

It is one of the most common questions we hear from visitors planning their time in Istanbul: "Is the Whirling Dervish ceremony real, or is it just a show for tourists?"

Istanbul is an extraordinary city for families. The Grand Bazaar, the Bosphorus ferry rides, the street cats that seem to own every neighborhood — children tend to fall in love with it almost immediately. And among th...

You have booked your tickets. You have read a little about the ceremony. Now you are standing in front of your suitcase wondering: what exactly do you wear to a Whirling Dervish ceremony?

When you watch a dervish spin — arms outstretched, white robe billowing, eyes half-closed — the movement looks effortless. Serene, even. As if turning in circles for thirty minutes is simply something they do.

Most visitors who come to Istanbul in search of Rumi head eventually to Konya — the central Anatolian city where Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi spent most of his life and where his turquoise-domed mausoleum draws millions of...

Istanbul is one of those rare cities that rewards visitors in every season. The light is different in each — the sharp blue of summer, the golden haze of autumn, the grey intimacy of winter, the green explosion of spr...

Most visitors to Sultanahmet spend their days in the obvious places — and rightly so. The Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern: these are monuments of world civilization, and they de...

The music of the Whirling Dervish ceremony is not accompaniment. It is not background. It is not decoration.

Gel, gel, kim olursan ol gel...
